A while back I went looking for an answer to a question I probably should have already known: are video games actually bad for kids?
I went in expecting the research to confirm the usual stuff. Wrecked attention spans, more aggression, the kid who can’t have their tablet taken away without a meltdown. That is not really what I found. Most of it pointed the other way, and some of it was just plain weird.
Here’s the one that stopped me. In the biggest study of its kind, how much time a teenager spent on screens, was tied to their wellbeing, about as strongly as how often they ate potatoes. Not “less harmful than people assume.” Roughly the same as potatoes.
So either millions of parents are wrong, or the question is the wrong one to be asking. After getting through a good chunk of the research, I think it’s mostly the question.
Where that potato number comes from
It came from a team at Oxford who collected data on more than 355,000 teenagers, which makes it one of the largest looks at this we have. When they ran the numbers, screen use explained at most about 0.4% of the differences in young people’s wellbeing. That is a real effect. It is also almost nothing, which is how you end up comparing it to potatoes.
Part of why this argument never settles, is hidden in that same study. With a dataset that big, there are hundreds of millions of reasonable ways to crunch the numbers, and depending on the choices you make, you can pull out a small bad effect, a small good one, or nothing at all. So a researcher who sets out to find harm usually can, and so can one who sets out to find none. Same numbers, opposite headlines.
”The more they play, the worse it gets” isn’t true
The neat idea that wellbeing drops steadily the more a kid plays, turns out to be wrong. A study of over 120,000 English teenagers found the relationship is a curve, not a downhill slope. Moderate play was fine. The lowest wellbeing actually showed up at the two extremes, and here’s the bit that gets left out of the scary version: no gaming at all looked about as unhelpful as loads of gaming. A moderate amount sat right at the top. The researchers called it the Goldilocks pattern, and the name fits.
It gets calmer still when you stop asking kids to guess their own hours. When researchers used the real, logged playtime handed over by the games companies, one study found a small positive link between time played and mood, and a later, stricter study that followed players for three months found no real link in either direction. Hours on their own just aren’t telling you much.
It’s less about the hours, more about what they cost
Once you stop counting hours, a more useful question shows up: what is the gaming pushing out of the day? That’s roughly where paediatric guidance has landed too. The American Academy of Pediatrics now leans away from a magic number of minutes and towards quality and context: not how long, but what the screen is replacing.
The clearest harm usually isn’t the gaming itself, it’s gaming that eats into sleep, movement, and time with actual people. A console that follows a kid into a dark bedroom at 11pm is a sleep problem first, and a gaming problem second. Two kids can put in the exact same hours, and be in completely different situations: one still sleeps, has mates, runs around, and switches it off when asked, the other does none of that. The clock can’t tell them apart. Everything else can.
So what’s the better question?
I’ve stopped seeing “how long were they on it?” as a very useful question on its own. The ones that tell me more:
- What is it replacing? Sleep, running around, friends, homework, or just boredom?
- Are they still doing the other things a decent week needs?
- Can they stop when it’s time, or does stopping start a war?
It’s part of why, when I started building something for kids myself, I didn’t want it to be one more thing designed to be impossible to switch off.
So “how much is too much?” doesn’t really have a number for an answer. The better question is what those hours are costing, or not costing. That’s harder to sum up in one line, but it’s a lot closer to the truth.
