I’ve played a lot of games over the years, all sorts, but every so often a particular one would swallow whole weeks of my life. The loop was always the same: wake up, play, sleep, repeat. I wasn’t cooking, just living off whatever I could get delivered, takeaways and junk, and there were stretches where I didn’t go outside for days. I wasn’t in a good place either: no real income, no clue what I was doing with myself. But the game always had somewhere for me to go next, a reward waiting, a sense of getting somewhere and being part of something. Real life didn’t.
The strange part is it never lasted. Around the one-month mark the whole thing would start to feel empty, like none of it had added up to anything, and that’s usually when I’d snap out of it. The games weren’t the problem. Leaning on them for everything was. Those instant rewards are brilliant at pulling you in for an evening, but they were never going to carry a whole life, and I was asking them to.
I think about that a lot now, because there’s a smaller, everyday version of it that drives parents up the wall. A kid who’ll happily grind away at a game for three hours will sit down to twenty minutes of homework and give up before they’ve really started. Same kid, same brain, completely different staying power. It’s easy to read that as laziness, or as a screen problem. I don’t think it’s either. I think it’s about how fast the reward turns up.
Games pay you now. Real life makes you wait.
Here’s the thing every game gets right and most of real life gets wrong: the payoff is instant. You swing the sword, the number goes up, the bar fills, a sound plays, all in the same second. Homework doesn’t work like that. You do the work today and the payoff, if you can even see it, lands weeks later as a grade, or years later as some vague “this will matter one day.”
Psychologists have a name for the gap between those two things: delay discounting. The further away a reward is, the less it’s worth to us right now. And here’s the part that matters for kids specifically: they discount the future far more steeply than adults do. In study after study, children reach for the smaller, sooner reward where an adult would wait for the bigger, later one, and the patience to hold out for the delayed payoff only grows slowly as they get older. It isn’t a flaw in your child. It’s a brain that hasn’t finished building the wiring that makes “later” feel real.
So when a kid picks the game over the homework, they’re not being lazy. They’re doing exactly what a still-developing reward system is built to do: take the sure thing that pays now over the fuzzy thing that pays maybe-someday.
It’s not just speed. It’s surprise.
Speed is only half of it. The other half is that games don’t just reward you, they reward you unpredictably, and that turns out to be the stronger hook of the two.
Back in the early days of behaviour science, researchers found that the most compelling reward schedule isn’t a steady, predictable one. It’s the variable kind, where you don’t know whether this action will pay off or the next one will. It’s the exact mechanism behind slot machines and loot boxes: the not-knowing is what keeps you pulling the lever. And your brain’s dopamine system, which fires at least as hard for the anticipation of a reward as for the reward itself, feeds right into it.
Homework offers none of that. The payoff is delayed, small, and completely predictable. A game offers a fast, uncertain, shiny one. Asking a kid to choose the homework on willpower alone is asking them to win a fight that’s rigged at the level of brain chemistry.
One caveat, because this is the point where people tend to jump straight to “games are addictive.” The reward machinery is real, but it isn’t destiny. When researchers tried to show that these schedules on their own could manufacture compulsive behaviour in rats, it didn’t cleanly hold up. The pull is strong. It is not a spell.
So is my kid just bad at waiting?
This is usually where the marshmallow test gets wheeled out: the famous study where small children who could resist one treat now for two treats later supposedly grew up more successful, the implication being that some kids just have the willpower and some don’t.
Except that’s not really what the research says any more. When a larger, more diverse replication revisited it in 2018, most of that headline predictive power shrank by about two-thirds once you accounted for the child’s background and home environment. Waiting wasn’t some fixed character trait shining through. It was tangled up with the life the kid was actually living.
And there’s an earlier study I keep coming back to. Researchers ran the same marshmallow setup, but first let each child find out whether the adult was reliable or flaky: for some kids a promise made was a promise kept, for others it wasn’t. The children who’d learned the adult was reliable waited far longer for the second marshmallow. The ones who’d been let down grabbed the sure thing straight away, which, when you think about it, is the smart move. Why wait on a payoff from someone who doesn’t deliver?
That reframes the whole thing. A kid grabbing the instant reward isn’t broken. They’re often making a sensible bet about which rewards are actually going to show up.
What actually helps
You’re not going to out-sparkle a video game, and you shouldn’t try. The goal isn’t to turn homework into Fortnite. It’s to shrink the gap between effort and payoff, so real life stops feeling like such a bad deal. A few things that follow from the research:
Make the payoff sooner and smaller. A grade in six weeks means nothing to a discounting brain. Ten minutes of reading followed by something good now means a lot. Break the big, far-off goal into wins they can actually feel today.
Make progress visible. Games show you a bar filling up; real life hides it. A simple streak, a chart, tasks crossed off a list. Seeing the bar move is half of why games feel good, and you can borrow that for nothing.
Reward the doing, not just the result. Real life usually only pays out at the finish line, and sometimes not even then. Noticing the effort along the way drops a small reward into what would otherwise be a long, empty stretch.
Be the reliable adult. This is the quiet big one. If “later” has too often turned into “never” or “we’ll see,” a kid learns, correctly, to grab whatever’s in front of them. Keeping the small promises you make is how waiting starts to look worth it to them.
This whole gap, the instant game against the delayed life, is the thing I kept slamming into during that lost year, and it’s what I ended up building around: putting a game’s fast, visible payoff on the far side of a real-world task, so for once the effort and the reward sit right next to each other.
I don’t think the answer is fewer games. I think it’s real life borrowing a few of the game’s better tricks.
